My name is Alex Mercer. I’m a new member of the Oceanography Lab at Daytona State College. Originally from North Carolina and now here in Florida, I have always been around the water. I’m a Navy veteran who is now pursuing my degree in Ocean Engineering. Since I was a child, I've been fascinated by the ocean and all it has to offer and explore. I got certified as a rescue diver in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. However, I prefer to free dive and spearfish. On the weekends you can always find me at the beach surfing, fishing, or painting marine life with acrylics. Sharks have always been a huge interest of mine and I love diving with them and spending time in their environment, so shark conservation and tracking is something I’m very passionate about. I look forward to all the research and information I will be learning throughout this semester and I know I have a great team behind me to help me out and get my feet wet!
