Ivy Gentry (UR)- Whats the real answer?

I have been looking forward to conducting this research; however, there have been some complications with being able to do so. I am hoping we can get everything figured out so I am able to conduct this research and be able to present the research! I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy in these times!

The top photo is a female hatchling and the bottom is a male hatchling!

I wish I was able to conduct more research for the data, but everything just was fighting against us this year.

  1. Question 1) Why would you consider it important to identify the gender of the sea turtles? Is there any known population issues? If so how can this data be useful in aiding the sea turtles populations?
Question 2) If you were able to preform this experiment what location(s) would you have chosen and why?
Question 3) I see you mentioned the different temperatures that decide the sea turtles sex. Would a bar graph aid in showing the genders of the hatchlings?
Question 4) What is a sieve and what is the U.S.A standard test sieve?
Overall I really enjoyed looking through your post! The pictures are amazing and placed neatly! Maybe try making your name a little larger on the first slide though. I have poor eye sight and just found that a little challenging to see. All the other slides font looks amazing though!

  2. I like the organization and aesthetic of the slides! What do you plan to do with the information once you sieve the sand?

  3. Theres a nice balance in your presentation Ivy! I love the idea of actually framing your photos making your research feel like a hatchling gallery! I cannot help but become more curious about this study with temperatures influencing the sexes of the hatchlings. What times of the day would you have collected temperature data? With the sand temperature varying, does it change a lot where the turtles are positioned? I'm also curious about what changes the different types of sand could influence?

  4. Hello Ivy! Your presentation immediately grabbed my attention because of how cute the hatchlings are. I also think the aesthetic of your color choices go great together. I think it would really enrich your proposal by adding pictures of your materials and describing them in lament terms. For example, what is a post hole digger and why do you use it? Was it manufactured specifically for turtle purposes?

  5. I love this topic Ivy! I think its incredibly interesting that temperature has an effect on the sex of this species. You have a very good scientific question that I'm eager to hear more about. Your powerpoint was very clear and professional. I do think that your name should be a bit larger on your first slide. In your known slide you said that above 87.8 degrees determines females and 81.86 and below determines males, so my question is what does the in between temperature produce? Could it be either male or female?
