Mason: Surfacing worms

This morning as I was checking on the worms and spraying the soil I observed that container four's worms were closer to the surface if not on the surface while the other three were not visible due to them being deeper down in the soil. This could be due to the fact that container four has the highest concentration of fertilizer and the worms are trying to escape the fertilizer.

  1. Mason--what are the application suggestions as far as concentration? (amount of fertilizer/volume of soil)

  2. BTW--do you have any pics of you wormy set up?

  3. Based on your methods description in the previous post, instead of placing the potatoes on top of the soil (which is what two vermiculture websites I looked up explain to do, because the worms come to the surface to feed plus the food needs oxygen to create bacteria that helps the worms consume the food) you randomly mixed it in with the soil and fertilizer. Is it possible that container four has potato pieces near the surface whereas the other containers ended up with potato pieces towards the bottom?

  4. Also, if they are moving to the surface due to the fertilizer concentration, how do worms sense the fertilizer? Do they feel it via their skin, smell it, taste it? Once you find this information, make sure you remember the source in the event anyone were to ask you this question after your presentation. If it turns out that they do not notice/sense the fertilizer at all, then at least you know this may not be the reason they are coming to the surface.
