Mason: All Wormed Out

Hi, I am Mason Sylvester from Daytona State College working on my Earth Worm Project. I have listed additional information about earth worms and why they matter in our ecosystem and what fertilizer can do to them click on the links to access these blogs. Worm Plan The Burrowers
Set up for my project began on Monday, December 7, 2015. The worms were placed and set in their containers following the procedure plan I created.

Materials
  • 4 containers16.5 inches x 13 inches x 6 and 5/8 inches
  • 4 potatoes
  • Scotts Southern Lawn Food 32-0-10
  • Spray Bottle with16oz of dui water
  • Nikon D40 Camera
  • ROYAL Ds3 Digital Scale
  • Shovel
  • 10 gallon bucket
  • soil
  • table
  • 40 Canadian Night Crawlers
  • Scotts Black Duct Tape
  • Pyrex Measuring  Cups (4cup and 8 cup)
Procedure
  1. Gathered Materials listed above
  2. Set up table in area with a consistent temperature and light
  3. Dug one foot below surface and gathered soil into a 10 gallon bucket  from unfertilized ground
  4. Prepped clear containers with black duct tape to block light from entering through the sides of the containers and reaching the soil.
  5. Cut the potatoes into halves three times for each piece giving me 8 pieces per potato. Following this  dice the potatoes into approximately  .5 inch piece.
  6. Measure the potatoes into 4 12oz piles
  7. Measure out 12 cups of soil for each of the 4 containers.
  8. Place12 cups of soil and 12oz of potatoes in each container
  9. Label the containers 1 through 4
  10. Measure out 1 gram of fertilizer, 2 grams of fertilizer, and 10 grams of fertilizer.
  11. Put 1 gram of fertilizer into container 2
  12. Put 2 grams of fertilizer into container 3
  13. Put 10 grams of fertilizer into container 4
  14. Thoroughly mix the contents of each container
  15. Seperate worms into 4 groups of 10
  16. Place 10 worms in each container
  17. Spray each container daily with 50 squirts from spray bottle filled with dui water
  18. Observe worms activity and fatalities and record the data for the duration of experiment
If you have any questions, suggestions, comments, and or information to share please feel free to post on this blog.  I will continue to blog through the duration of the experiment.

  1. Why are you including potatoes? (My apologies if you've previously covered this in a post and I forgot.)

    1. It is food for the worms so they don't die of starvation. I choose potatoes because worms like them and they are a hearty root vegetable that will last the length of the project.

  2. What did you put in the 1st container? And why the jump from 2g of fertilizer up to 10g? Is it common for farmers/people to apply fertilizer and then mix it into the 'soil'? What form is the fertilizer?--solid? Liquid? What is dui water? What is the 'duration' of your experiment and why was this time chosen?

    1. Oh--I see from your previous post you were going to run your experiment for 3 weeks. Guess that has changed. Also--you should have included a duplicate e.g., 2, 2g fertilizer tank. Without one, you will forever be challenged with questions about something simply being wrong/different with your tank setup.
