Valerie, U.R., This Week in Review

This week in review is interesting to say the least. I have decided to change my project idea from The Effects of Dredging to Testing for Iron in the Inter Coastal Waters. I am still thinking of my scientific question on this subject. Such as, is iron abundant in the local waters ways? Is iron an essential mineral for the underwater habitats? I will continue to narrow it down. Any suggestions?
I am looking forward to our field study this Friday in the Tomoka River. This may help with my topic and the locations I will consider to sample for my iron testings. I would also like to test the amount of iron in a spring fed pond. My next decision is where I am to sample for iron. I may want to sample a variety of location for comparison. I would also like to research the effects of too much iron in the water ways.
I would like to ask if anyone has any location suggestions for my research?

  1. I was thinking if you find a link between an abundance of iron and maybe its negative effects on marine life, you could go to the Indian River Lagoon. The location where we were had a lot of marine life, as well as that shrimping house, what effects could that have on their business? I'm excited you have found something that feels likes its going to work.

  2. I would also ask--what would be the sources of iron in our waterways? Is excess iron a problem anywhere? And--iron can be in different forms; oxidized and reduced. Which forms might be a problem and which are needed by organisms. It's important for you (and all of you) to be able to answer questions such as this about your topic.

  3. Just one more thought. I really want you to do a project on something that you are interested in. I know you had real enthusiasm about dredging. You might still be able to do an experiment based on the impact of turbidity on some sort of marine life. Thanks about this and discuss it with your classmates--you can blog more than once a week if that helps.
