Cathy UR, The Past Week

So the past week has been an exciting one for me, I believe I have decided what my undergraduate research will be about, I plain on placing a ball with a tracker in it at one location inland and tracking its way out to sea. By doing this I hope to show how what we do in our own back yards effects the ocean. But I have come across a problem I can not seem to find a map of the water ways. Being new to the area is not helping much either. I plain on going to Port Orange city hall tomorrow and asking someone there for help finding a map. If anyone knows of one or where else I could find one I would greatly appreciated it.

On another note my graphing seems to be improving, below is my latest graph it shows a spike in drift algae cover between the years 1997 and 1998.

When we were out in the lagoon on Friday January 31, I noticed that there is not much algae in the area as the experienced these two years. I wondered why there was so much growth in these two years, I did some research on it but I was unable to find out to much for these years. there must have been some kind of massive runoff or plant fertilizer runoff to support this data. I wish I could find out more I will look into it some more in the upcoming week and let you know what I find out!

  1. Cathy--excellent graph! However, Make sure you identify where these data were taken i.e., location in the IRL? Also---I'm not clear when you talk about "...these two years..." to which two are you referring? Also, I just received notification that SJWMD will be spending millions of dollars to research drift algae in the IRL; it will be interesting to see what their findings are.

  2. Your graph looks great, I'm getting better but it has been different wrapping my head around them. As far as your project I know we got to talking a little before we left from class last Friday, have you thought of what type of device you will use to track the ball. As far as inhibitors have you thought of any setbacks you may face with the tracking process, i.e. it getting stuck, someone picking it up, or an animal getting ahold of it. I love the idea and think it will be great to show evidence to people, as many times that is the only way to convince them of their bad habits. :) Good Luck.. See you on Friday!!

    1. Great thoughts, Kristen! I also have some questions. To 'track' the ball I guess you are going to assume that there will be water movement--flow in some direction. What conditions would this require?--tidal movement? a lot of rain? And the other question is...what about groundwater? Florida is built on a limestone platform and we actually have 'underwater streams' that flow beneath us..carrying lots of water that has been filtered from the surface. Your water 'movement' may be the result of groundwater infiltration. WOW--lots for you to think about. Please continue posting your thoughts so we can collaborate with you and help you out!
